Review of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (Certificate 12A)

Image of the Star Wars Force Awakens movie posterOfficially known as Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, this epic space adventure is the seventh in the film series. Set approximately 30 years after the second Death Star was destroyed, it focuses on the disappearance of Jedi master Luke Skywalker. Han Solo and his best friend Chewbacca the Wookie try to find Luke before the First Order (a resurrection of the Galactic Empire) does.

As with all of the Star Wars films, the Force Awakens features lots of twists and turns, plenty of exciting action, and some great tongue-in-cheek humour, much of which is provided by the old comedy droid duo, R2D2 and C3P0. Princess Leia also makes a welcome return and although she is obviously looking much older, the actress Carrie Fisher was looking really good. Apparently she had been working out at the gym for months and lost around three stone for the role. And while Darth Vader and Yoda are sadly no longer alive in this Star Wars film, there are plenty of new aliens, robots and 'baddies' to make up for them being missing, such as the nasty Kylo Ren, and the cute orange and white ball-shaped BB-8 droid.

This was an important film for Star Wars fans to like, since George Lucas had previously sold off the entire franchise to Disney for an incredible US$4 billion. So far, box office takings for The Force Awakens have exceeded US$2 billion, and the film has become one of the biggest and most successful movies that Disney has ever filmed. Much of this success is attributed to director J. J. Abrams, who has previously directed the three latest Star Trek films and also Mission Impossible 'Ghost Protocol', with Tom Cruise, amongst his many other credits.

Well, what did I think of this Star Wars film then, bearing in mind that I'm not really much of a fan in the first place? I genuinely loved it, it was brilliant and so easy to follow. I don't like it when film plots are so complicated that you have to concentrate too hard on the storyline. My favourite quote was this one by Han Solo: 'How do we blow it up? There's always a way to do that.'
